VALSPAR TRADE ARE BACK ON THE ROAD! TAKING YOU BEHIND THE SCENES…

Exclusively at B&Q

We recently kicked off our college tour, travelling across the country to deliver our award-winning Colour Workshop to a range of painting and decorating students. Read on, as we take you behind the scenes of our visit to Riverside College in Widnes…

Our Colour Workshops are delivered by our expert team of regional Trade Sales Specialist (TSS)’s, able to share their industry and product knowledge with students and help establish a point of contact for their future decorating careers. This Riverside College workshop was
delivered by Terry Maguire and Mark Dunford, our TSS and TSC for the North West region.

We started the day off by first taking a step back, exploring what exactly goes into each tin of paint the students encounter on a daily basis and why these elements are so crucial when it comes to creating a premium paint.
We then moved onto the all-important colour! There is far more to colour than meets the eye and we did our best to cover it all; from colour psychology to the importance of achieving the perfect match and how students can recommend different tonal schemes, using the 60:30:10
rule.

Everyone loves a competition, which is why we then got the students involved in our Colour Quiz. Things certainly got competitive when chocolates and sweets were on the line! Giving students a behind-the-scenes view of the colour tinting process, we would watch pigments being poured into a tin, before having to put what they’d learnt about colour theory into practice and take guesses at what the final colour would be.

After lunch we moved onto a fun practical session, where the students could get hands on with our Valspar Trade paint! They tested a range of our solutions, including our leading Tough Matt, Contract Matt, Acrylic Wood & Metal and Knot Block Wood Primer & Undercoat. It was great to
see them interact with the paints, loving how easy they were to apply and roll on, as well as the opacity. One student even remarked about how they appreciated the low levels of VOCs within the paints.

Adam Johnson, Painting & Decorating Lecturer at Riverside College, said: “It was fantastic to get Valspar Trade in to chat to students, with their colour workshop linking directly to the theory and practical element of the current course module. Sharing this industry experience and knowledge offers students a great opportunity to learn more about the available products and be given a glimpse into the painting sector as a whole.”
